The third annual American Manga Awards were held August 20 at Japan Society in New York City, recognizing manga released for readers in the United States and Canada along with the publishing and localization teams behind them. Billy Bat, published by Kana and Abrams ComicArts, won Best New Manga, while The Summer Hikaru Died Vol. 6 from Yen Press took Best Continuing Manga Series and Machiko Kyo’s Cocoon from VIZ Media won Best One-Shot Manga.


Other winners included Kodansha’s Mushishi Collector’s Edition Vols. 1–2 for Best New Edition of Classic Manga, Jan Mitsuko Cash for translating Magica Vol. 1, Madeleine Jose for lettering Maid to Skate, and Wendy Chan for the publication design of Fruits Basket: The Complete Box Set. The awards also honored Princess Jellyfish creator Akiko Higashimura with the American Manga Award of Distinction, which she accepted in person while visiting New York for Anime NYC.


The ceremony additionally inducted publishing veterans Chigusa Ogino and the late Ioannis Mentzas into the Manga Publishing Hall of Fame. By recognizing translators, letterers, designers, publishers and creators alongside the manga themselves, the awards continue to highlight the broader group of professionals responsible for bringing Japanese manga to North American readers.
